European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde spent most of her press conference Thursday dancing around the question of when the central bank is likely to start cutting interest rates, to which she replied that the governing council said it was too early to begin discussing that.
But one question hit a bit closer to home. Lagarde was asked about a survey of ECB staffers that showed dissatisfaction with her, with a majority not wanting her as its leader.
A lawyer by training, Lagarde replied that ECB’s own surveys show overwhelming satisfaction with working at the central bank — 80% are happy to work there, another 75% would recommend to a friend working there. Some 90% say there’s a mission associated with their work, Lagarde said.
“We pay great attention to these technically sound responses, and we act upon them, and we will continue to do so,” she said.
“I’m very proud and honored to lead the institution because we are driven by our mission, delivering price stability, but delivering price stability, and we will continue doing that.”
